Exercise gets all the credit. Every wellness feed, every doctor's office poster, every New Year's resolution: movement is sold as the non-negotiable, the thing your body needs to release the chemicals that make you feel steady, clear, and good. And it's not wrong. It's just not the whole story.
Because there's a second way to get there, and your body's had it the whole time.
What a Runner's High Actually Is
For decades, the runner's high has gotten all the credit when it comes to endorphins, your body's natural painkillers, which can be released under exertion. And that's still part of it. But the more recent science tells a different story: the euphoria of a hard run is driven largely by endocannabinoids, not endorphins. Anandamide, sometimes nicknamed the "bliss molecule," is chemically similar to the compounds found in cannabis, and unlike endorphins, it crosses easily from your blood into your brain. That's the part actually responsible for the calm, clear-headed high you get after a long run.
It took researchers decades to correct the story on exercise, and it turns out the popular explanation was only half right.
Now Compare that to an Orgasm
Now let's talk about what happens during orgasm. A cascade of chemicals are released that most people have never had explained to them at all:
- Dopamine, the same reward chemical behind motivation and drive
- Endorphins, the identical natural painkillers credited with the runner's high
- Oxytocin, which lowers stress and builds a felt sense of trust and closeness
- Prolactin, which brings on calm and helps with sleep
- DHEA, a hormone tied to tissue repair and recovery
Dopamine and endorphins show up with both exercise AND orgasm. But orgasm adds oxytocin, prolactin, and DHEA to the mix... a broader chemical payoff than a run alone produces, and one your body can generate in a fraction of the time.
The Time Math
A runner's high generally takes 20 to 40 minutes of sustained, moderate-to-vigorous effort to kick in (an estimate of between 3-5 miles!). That's a real investment, and it's a genuinely good one that we're not suggesting you skip. But it's worth asking why one path to this chemistry gets a poster in every gym, and the other doesn't get mentioned at all.
Not Instead Of. Alongside.
This isn't an argument against exercise. It's an argument against only telling half the story about how your body actually produces the chemicals it needs to feel well. Movement is one door in. Pleasure is another. Your body doesn't rank them... it just responds to the chemistry, however it gets there.
Work smarter. Your body already knows more than one way.
