In 2007, a city councilman in Esperantina, Brazil passed an actual municipal law creating a holiday for female pleasure. Partly to raise awareness. Partly, by his own admission, to repay a sexual debt to his wife (umm, piping hot tea right there). Either way, August 8th has been International Female Orgasm Day ever since, and honestly, it's one of the better origin stories a holiday has.
The Gap This Day Is Actually About
Here's the less charming part. Roughly, at least one in three women report not orgasming during partnered sex. For men, that number is closer to one in fifty. Here at Cerē, we call that the pleasure gap, and it's been studied for years without closing much.
It's not usually about biology. Most women need clitoral stimulation to reach orgasm, and most sex education, most porn, and most casual assumptions about "sex" still center on penetration alone. The gap isn't a mystery. It's a design flaw in how pleasure got taught in the first place.
Why We Care About a Made Up Holiday
This particular day happens to point directly at the exact problem Cerē exists to help close. A day built around a councilman's apology to his wife is, weirdly, still doing more to name the pleasure gap out loud than most sex ed ever did.
How We're Celebrating
Today's not really a day for subtlety, so we're not going to pretend otherwise. Consider this your sign to actually make time for it today, solo or otherwise, and to stop treating your own pleasure like the thing that gets sacrificed first when the day runs long.
