Yes, summer is sexy, but so is the off season. It's just always had a different marketing angle.
Summer has spent a century convincing us it's the erotic season. Less clothing, more skin, warm nights, the whole mythology. Now think about what your actual summer looked like. At times overheated, overscheduled, sunburned in one specific place, running on six hours of sleep since Memorial Day. Beautiful season. Less than ideal conditions.
Because desire isn't a personality trait you either have or don't. It runs on conditions, and there are four that matter.
The Four things that desire actually needs:
- Sleep. The most reliable input there is, and summer is the worst sleeper of the year: long light, late nights, hot bedrooms.
- A cool room. Your core temperature has to drop for sleep to start properly, which is why August bedrooms fail at both sleep and everything else you might want a bedroom for.
- Privacy. Guest rooms, shared houses, kids home from school, thin walls. Summer is a season of proximity to everyone except the person you'd choose.
- Unscheduled time. Nothing kills anticipation faster than a calendar that's been full since March.
Summer makes all four an obstacle. Fall returns all four, at once, within about three weeks. The bedroom cools down. The house empties out. The calendar goes quiet in a way it hasn't since spring. None of that is a consolation prize. Those are the exact conditions, arriving together, right on schedule.
Summer was for being seen. Fall is for being felt.
How to actually use it
- Claim the hours between 7pm and 10pm. Fall's real gift is evenings that belong to you. Stop filling them out of habit.
- Drop the bedroom temperature. Somewhere in the mid to upper 60s. Free, immediate, and it improves sleep and sex in the same move.
- Close the door. In summer privacy is luck. In fall it's a decision, and it's the condition most people forget they're now allowed to make.
- Stock the drawer before you need it. Conditions one through three arrive on their own. The fourth thing is the only one that requires you to go get it.
You didn't lose anything in July. You just never had the conditions. They're coming back now, all four of them, and you get to keep them until spring.
Peak season starts this month.
